Battenberg Pattern | Ambulance Decals Designs

It’s important for drivers in Buffalo this winter to take extra care around emergency vehicles.  Unfortunately, the presence of ambulances and fire trucks along the roadside aren’t always noticeable which can be dangerous for everyone.  For this reason, significant time and effort is spent into improving ambulance decal designs to increase visibility.

An optimized ambulance graphics scheme, known as the Battenberg pattern, is thought to have several benefits over more traditional ambulance designs.  Simply put, the Battenberg design is a checkerboard layout of two alternating colors. Here’s a couple reasons why the Battenberg pattern can make the case as the safest ambulance graphic design.

Color Contrast is Key

The best way to reduce roadside accidents involving emergency vehicles is to make them stand out against the background.  The easiest way to do this is by adding contrasting colors to your design which is where the Battenberg pattern excels. For this type of design it’s best to couple lighter and darker colors together to be easily noticed at any time of day.  Light green or yellow coupled with a darker blue is great place to start.

Recognizable as an Emergency Vehicle

Drivers noticing your ems vehicle is only half the battle.  Getting them to recognize it as an emergency vehicle can be a little trickier.  Ambulance graphics and decals can help with recognition but the Battenberg pattern takes conspicuity to another level.

The checkered “brand” is starting to grow into something distinct to ems vehicles.  Although you won’t find many cruising around here in the US, the style is becoming quite popular in Europe and the rest of the world.  Battenberg designs are already being used in police and ems fleets in the UK, Sweden, Hong Kong and Australia to name a few.

Future of Ambulance Graphics in the US

Some studies suggest the Battenberg pattern is more effective for driver visibility. However, the United States Fire Administration remarks that more research is still needed.  Either way, the Battenberg design scheme is certainly unique and there are obvious benefits to making ambulance decal designs more uniform across the board. It’s quite possible that we start seeing Battenberg designs pop up on our safety vehicles soon here in the US.
